It's not about the money at all. It's about the team work. Venture capital is good and all. But, what we need is a new way for teams to organize projects and work together. I think that's the real part missing.

Nice idea, but it would only work if CH was still active.

http://www.cambrianh...ers-launch-vencorps/

VenCorps is the 'new' CH. ("$50,000 + 50,000 points" for the winning idea [the idea must alread be a StartUp])

P.S. If you're intrested in joining VC; you probably will get/have got an Alpha-invate, if not, you should contact someone of the CH-staff. (Or sign yourself up the Beta version...)

Give away more money, and make the giveaways more often. People come to Cambrian house for this reason, if nobody knows this you are very blind. Look around, people are just interested about winning money. And then maybe a chance to take their idea to the next level. But crap, nobody can't take a great idea a long ways with a $100. Look at Ideablob on the internet. Their web traffic reaches about 30K right now. Cambrian House's web traffic reaches at least 20K. Check it out on http://www.compete.com. Ideablob gives away 10K for an idea. Now we are talking there. That is what Cambrian House needs to do. If you don't like Cambrian House I say check out Ideablob, it is really a great site if you want to really win some money for an idea. And there you go.

Moogy, I just fired off your invite. Sorry your account was overlooked. If anyone else reading this is missing a migration invitation let me know I'll send off or re-send a migration email.

We've got a Gwabs launch deadline which made a delightful sound as it rushed past. I'll clean up CH once we've got Gwabs under control. Not clean up as in fun and exciting and active, but clean up so the redirections to chaordix, vencorps and gwabs are clear.

Thanks to JelmerBV for updating me whenever there's spam. Our CH monitor screen has been repurposed as a green screen for shooting Gwabs video. While spam on CH doesn't impact any of our processes, its sort of a matter of principle to delete those spam posts once in a while.

Its funny I was shopping for a used iPhone on Craigslist and I suspect some of the posts were made by similar spammers. Not a single Craigslist ad I responded to about iPhones responded back to me. (Not that the listings looked identical, but I was trying to figure why someone would advertise a phone but not respond to inquiries... maybe they just wanted to collect contact info to direct more spam to.) (eBay worked well though. Oh Android G1... you haven't quite nailed it yet. I'll be eagerly awaiting a G2.)

With the North American economy slowing down, I hope one day to appeal to Nigerians for financial assistance.

Yup that's fine, I'm not meaning to imply that you were.

This is just something we're trying to avoid in advance, instead of saying after the fact "gee we really wish you hadn't done that".

Hey Brenden, I know there's a concern we haven't yet communicated to all alpha invitees.

VenCorps wants to keep this quite private at the moment. So discussing overall impressions is fine, but (at the opposite end of the spectrum), posting screenshots, they (and we) definitely don't want.

Our FAQ has just been updated to reflect new VenCorps point bonuses offered for your Cambros and GPs, and I know Will Pate is posting new pertinent content on his blog.

For those members already affected by incorrect VenCorps points calculations, I'll be correcting their VenCorps account shortly.

We're totally finding glitches as this first batch goes forward, and we're improving our code and messaging to reflect that.

I don't expect you'll see a comprehensive list of invitees here, its sort of their business (the invitees) whether or not they want to share. But I can tell you its a short list, but for the amount of insight its offered, its plenty big enough.

Hi, I'm muon. Background in applied physics and math, and an experienced software QA engineer (building test framework architectures for large webapps, coordinating large dev and QA teams through Trac and Buggy, design and construction of testcases, automated performance testing scripts; Ruby/Watir, Silk, etc). Know Csharp/Cplusplus, java, html, css, Python; overall software development process. Know hardware too; basic EE, circuit design, physical-layer networking. Have been interested in (and directly involved with) multiple technical fields, ranging from particle physics to biotech to AI and general software engineering (several startup companies). Have worn many hats, ranging from circuit repair to copywriting to patent research; while most of my recent work is in software dev/QA.

I joined CH about a year ago, but my day job left almost no free time to even check the site, much less help build ideas here. No longer employed full-time IRL, and looking to get serious with the potential of CH immediately! Available for many hours each week, I'll be searching the current CH ideas and businesses; please feel free to ping me anytime to request help on a project.

I'm also a practicing Christian. I'm more than happy to advise on any of these three areas. I also have limited experience with electronics and programming.

I see my main contribution to projects on this site as development and furtherance of ideas and products: I may not be able to code it myself but that doesn't mean I don't understand how it works and can't offer suggestions, work on design concepts or test a product and offer advice.

I believe we have a very powerful group of people here; with the right kind of teamwork we could really have an impact, whether that's in the business world or somewhere more lasting like environmental or charitable products.

Looking forward to working with you all!

hello folks!

well, I'm an Innocentive solver, and I've already made some money there. now I KNOW I'll make a lot of money there. the system is simple, straightforward, clear, honest. believe me - I'll be a top solver at that community, shortly.

looking for 'crowdsourcing' google brought me CH. and my experience has been:

VenCorps "capture" you as the main inofrmation at CH HOME.

then I entered VenCorps, I've read a lot of info, I've filled a complete profile, upload picture, etc.

After all this, I discover I had to be in the US or Canada to enroll, to anything. well, I'm in Brazil... ;o(

Then I came back to CH. the same profile, all my personal info, plus picture... adress, even a quote! (the ZIP code field is formatted for US, bu this is just a detail)... but when I tried to 'start a business' I discovered I can not - because I'm already with VenCorps. I go back to VenCorps, but the website give me no option to DELETE my profile.

I'm out of both!... great.

this is not global. with this mentality it will be surpassed by others, quickly. the major solver community at Innocentive live in India.

farewell!

In case you were curious, CH has always had a core business model: its outputs, not its processes. Outputs being: Gwabs, GoN, etc. Processes: ch.com, ideawarz. We had hopes that if the community scaled then we would find some interesting way to monetize.

This is much like a typical VC. You don't pay them for their time, nor for submitting a business plan. They make money by investing capital (human and financial) into the people/companies they discover.

Make sense?

MJ, yes, it makes sense, thank you! I am familiar with the old VC concept, at least from a software perspective. I can also see why mixing it with crowdsourcing turns out to be interesting but challenging:

VCs and their associates are a team of core experts that work together well in choosing projects. They tend to have a stake in the company, so seriousness is a given. Furthermore, VCs have expertise in following good business and implementation practices with safeguards.

In contrast, the crowd is, well, just crowds. In the raw, it may be a good source for market and idea validation, but I think few would disagree that building a valid business from this single pool is ineffective to say the least.

I can envision VenCorps being the embodiment of LinkedIn, innocentive and CH, all under one roof and it is an exciting prospects from all parties involved. Without giving too much away to your competitors, do you see VenCorps as a different means of implementing the original model, or a whole different model altogether?

Best,

/ooper

totally agree with what your saying there.

I for one am looking forward to transition. It can only lead to bigger and better things. The community atm is pretty tight, maybe we all need a new start just to get real investment opportunities off the ground.

Like you say ooper, one of the biggest things with CH is, How does CH make money? i mean they made all those viral videos early on (spending money) and then the idea wars competitions (spending money)maybe CH was just a platform to show customers of the software they're selling via Chaordix. I don't know tbh, i just made that up.

i've had a great time on CH but with the lack luster ideas coming though and us being joined by spammers frequently, i think us as a community needs to move onto bigger and better things, maybe vencorps is that things. Who knows?

all i know is that i want to give it a trial run before i slate it. Thats even if i slate it as to me it just looks like one heck of a great new opportunity. I mean this vencorps company could of started in direct competition with CH, and what would have happened then?

I have seen this kind of opposition before mind, in a game i used to play a few years back (runsescape anybody!?) when they moved from one version to another there was absolute uproar people quiting left, right and center (these were people who had invested hundreds of hours on they're characters) but then when the new version was released everybody was singing they're praises. actually is kind nothing to do with that but i think you get my drift...

sorry guys this is one of those posts when things kept popping into my head and i kinda didn't realize the post would be this long!

anyway to finish off...

Long live the spirit of CH! No matter where we all end up!

I have read enough discontent and borderline harshness elsewhere in this forum.

It's totally understandable, but as much as we'd love to consider CH a family, it isn't.

I am not here to place judgment on anyone, but do understand that business is business and some flux should be expected in all acquisition/mergers/deals.

Yes, the customer comes first, but we will all be far better off to let these guys sort out what is viable for their business (and its transition) first. That way, they don't feel pressured to tell us what we want to hear and/or make mistakes that will put us right back where we started from shortly after.

By any means, no one should place all their marbles in one place --that is just plain common-sense.

I, for one, STILL don't know what CH's business model ever was...perhaps it was trying to be all things to everyone?

Let the dust settle, or take your business elsewhere Happy

Market for Public Goods (improved Performer Protocol)http://www.cambrianhouse.com/forums/topic/idea-brainstorming/2970/#post-21925Ideas and Warzhomunq

2 months, 1 week ago

Actually, I misspoke a bit. "Dominant assurance contracts" do not pay a consolation prize if the good is not produced; they only provide the consolation prize if the pledges do not reach a predetermined "sufficient" amount. This avoids the perverse incentive to hamper success.

To generalize to the case of ongoing donations rather than pledges: you could offer double-money-back prize to anyone if the month starting with (and including) their donation has under a third of the donations of the month prior to their donation. This would encourage people to keep donating, with the assurance that they will not be the only (last) one to do so. Altruism still plays a part, but it is supplemented by rationality (and by a gambler's mentality).

Market for Public Goods (improved Performer Protocol)http://www.cambrianhouse.com/forums/topic/idea-brainstorming/2970/#post-21924Ideas and Warzhomunq

2 months, 1 week ago

I'm posting this on pre-ideas because it needs a little ironing out.

The problem? Large, collaborative, ongoing efforts to provide public goods - such as open source projects - are underfunded.

There have been several proposed attempts to remedy this. The "street performer protocol" is the suggestion that you solicit pledges of donations, then produce the good when the pledges add up to a sufficient amount. This has been implemented in the form of crowdfunding, yet it is not perfect. There are not always enough incentives to donate, and it encourages competition instead of cooperation to produce the good.

There have been proposals to fix both of these problems. To encourage donors, there is the "rational street performer protocol", where donors encourage each other by making their pledged donations conditional on a sliding scale; and "dominant assurance contracts", where (a) centralized entity(ies) take(s) a profit on contracts and uses some of it to pay "consolation" money to those who make pledges which go unfulfilled. Yet both of these fail to give any incentive to donate retroactively - after the good already in the public domain.

To encourage cooperation, there is the "wall street performer protocol". This is an attempt to help organize individual producers to cooperate by creating a futures market in the pledges - the holders of the futures contracts would be motivated to promote any productive cooperation. However, in my mind, the weakness of this proposal is the initial allocation of the futures contracts to a single party. It is true that this party will be motivated to help (financially or otherwise) the production of the good, but they could also just sit back and wait. Moreover, any system which is perceived as unfair will actually discourage altruistic contributions.

My idea is to combine these into a single "public goods marketplace". The goods in question are assumed to have the following characteristics:

- Once they exist, they can provide benefits to a large population (for instance, for an open source software product, the users).

- It is impractical or undesirable to exclude people from these benefits.

- Some of them can be improved over time, or need maintenance. This improvement or maintenance should be funded too.

The market would have the following characteristics:

- Each good would be covered by one "project", which could be divided into any number of "subprojects".

- Each subproject or project would have "shares". Subproject shares would also count as shares in the containing project.

- Donors could make either direct donations, general pledges, or subproject pledges to a given project.

- Direct donations and general pledges would be divided among project "shareholders" by number of shares.

- General pledges would be payable when a project reached its next generally-agreed-upon quality milestone. Milestones would be set to be attainable; thus, a mature project's milestone could be something like "still has at least 10K users on date X 6 months from now"

- Specific pledges would be payable when specific features were attained. A portion of the money would go only to shareholders in that subproject, and another portion would go to the project as a whole. The relative proportions would depend on the amount of money that has gone to each; a small specific pledge on an immature main project would go largely to the subproject, whereas a large specific pledge on a mature main project would go as much as 2/3 to the main project.

- Pledges would expire after a certain time. Donors who had their pledges expire would get a "consolation prize". The size of the "consolation prize" would depend on how likely it had been at the time of donation. Highly funded, easy projects would have large "consolation prizes"; underfunded, hard ones would have nominal "consolation prizes", which could come in the form of privileges rather than money.

- Each project could determine its own form of share allocation, and whichever model was most successful would win out. Democracy and equity would be desirable aspects in these schemes. For instance, a project could assign 1 share for each hours' work in contribution, with extraordinary contributions rewarded with (limited numbers of) extra shares, and then reduce the value these shares by 2% for every dollar they paid out (so that later contributors did not have their shares too diluted). Note that, for open source, marketing and documentation are contributions as important as coding. (Many details to work out)

- Shares would be transferrable, allowing shareholders to "cash out" at any time. Note that speculators would still have an interest in encouraging cooperation.

Some mechanics:

- There would be ways to pay shareholders irrespective of geography.

- There would of course be widgets to get donations and pledges, which people could put on any web page. Pledges would be kept in escrow if the pledger were not fully trusted for some reason. Pledge amounts would be public knowledge, though of course they could be made anonymously.

- The house would take a cut, both for profit and to provide for "consolation prizes". This cut would be kept minimal and announced up-front.

- Existing software projects could be covered, and they would have to work out share allocation. To keep things from getting too rancorous, these "retroactive shares" would be of a relatively small number of "hours" relative to the actual investment in a project, and would go to a relatively small number of universally respected project members (basically, the "founder" and "maintainer"Wink.

- This would work best if hosted by an existing, respected open-source company, or, even better, by a coalition of them. Obviously, there are "network effects".
