The Idea

I work quite a lot in Vancouver and when I'm walking from my apartment downtown to the office I'm always amazed at the lack of use of the alleyways. These could be used to provide some funky shops, galleries, cafe's. Some people are getting the idea - I seem to recall Salt is off one of the alleys. Anyway - how cool would it be to have these alleyways used....

I thought of this idea when I was...

Walking to work one day.

How are you going to get access to the rights of these alleyways?

I'm currently living in melbourne at the moment and the alleyways here are where you find all the cool stuff. Most of the best bars, clubs, resturants are tucked away down tiny passages.

Not sure if it really fits into the CH model but good idea all the same

Aren't alleyways usually made up of the side of buildings(that are already used). which would mean there would be no where to put the shops, galleries and cafe's.

if there is a suitable location (you might have already found one) it is a good idea.

Fair points - all.

techguy - it's not necessarily up to me to get the right - my idea is more to stimulate ideas on the the use of these, mostly dingy, parts of a downtown core.

drh - good comment - I'm still getting to gips with the whole CH concept. I've also worked and travelled to places where, like Melbourne, most of the best bars etc. are down the alleyways - plus you don't have to worry about cars.

jamin88 - I've seen it work in so many other countries that I'm sure it could work. You bring up a good point though of how to make it physically work.
