The Idea

Sure del.icio.us lets your friends know what websites you think are cool and which ones you visit on a regular basis, but, aren't there times you want to tell people there are sites that you wouldn't visit if you were the last web-enabled human on planet earth? Atro.ciou.us would let users bookmark and share bad websites--whether they're scam sites, politically insensitive sites, nasty sites, poorly designed sites, or whatever your definition of an atrocious site is. This would be designed much like bookmarking sites with users tagging websites and adding commentary on the sites.

I thought of this idea when I was...

This idea resulted from a meshing delicious with a gripe from several friends who both hate wading through tons of bad websites and love talking about how bad they are.

How would it make money? (granted they still are trying to figgure out how to make money with delicious)

Yeah. I guess atrocious would go the typical ad, affiliate, search route for revenue.
Although, if the crowd's vote so far on this idea is indicative of the reaction it would get, the first site that's listed on atro.ciou.us may be atro.ciou.us.

I'm not sure about the money aspect, but it could also work as an extension/tool bar that warned you of attrocious links.

I like it. Knowing where not to look can be just as useful as where to look...

A few things come to mind.

Consider the downvoting phenomenon at CH - and how the same thing could happen if people list good websites on atro. just because they can. But that is a design feature, not central to your actual idea.

People might go to atro. specifically to FIND terrible websites, just like people read (and give out) the Darwin Awards - a dark part of us likes to see others tripping up.

I think the traffic to atro. would have a lot of those, looking for a laugh.

But finally it could be a useful rating system - search engines might use it as a filter? (A bad rating on atro could influence where a site places on the screen full of hits).

Hmmmmm.

Any thoughts on who would use it and why?

I like this idea. Why not take the list of bad sites and use it as a filter that prevents you from going to bad sites. You could even use it to keep kids from seeing sites that are listed on Atro.ciou.us

I like the subversive nature of it and it will appeal to our Darkside. Money will come from advertising I reckon

Over the past couple rounds, I've had trouble with my IdeaWarz log-in. Who could be behind this? Who would have the TECHnical skills to do this? Who would be that GUY?
Conspiracy? Maybe. I forgot my password? Also possible.
In any event, after my log-in troubles, I felt like I needed to up my mojo in taking on the mighty techguy.
So, I changed my Village People-esque cowboy hat that Hal picked out for me to JJ from Good Times.
JJ will either bring me good luck, or, if I lose I will be able to blame my loss on the evil nature of techguy and a lack of brand identity vis-a-vis the impromtu change in icon status.
Either way.
May the best icon... errr... idea win.

mswayne,
Thanks for the great laugh. I only have 2 responses.

I've never shown you my evil nature.

I blame any problems on the leaky faucet http://www.cambrianh...e.com/member/Harkins .

Thanks for the new scapegoat, Tech Guy!
And best of luck to you, because win or lose, we're all on the same team.
