Android location mobile game.
Play all kind of old school games like pack man, tick-tac-toe, snake, etc. Except the real life version. The player sets the size of the map it could be the town center or entire city's. Play (You vs. Computer) or (You vs. Friends)
It is kind of like: http://pacmanhattan.com/
Also, unlike other users ideas on Cambrian House. I can actually code in the Android SDK. See video for game prototype.
Fun Fact
Did you know pac-man used to be called puck-man. Before the game moved to America. Company's were afraid vandals with a marker might change to name and graphics to something obscene. Just look at some of the original graphics:

http://www.spikedhum...ub_Dread_Pacman.html
(Language and violence warning. Oh and sex warning. In fact don't anyone watch it.)
Ok, neat idea. I don't usually think of GPS combined with classic games. I don't think they would interpret well usually, but Pac-Man is certainly one of the better candidates I could think of.
This is not an easy thing to whip up.
How are you going to deal with latency issues. Ie especially with multiplayer game aspects. and with GPS latency.
Don't get me wrong. I like the idea.
I know from personal experience this is not trivial.
Its pretty amazing that it used to take huge machines to run games like Pac-Man and Gallaga and now we can do it on tiny cellphones (easily I might add).
Have you looked into how much the licensing would cost at all ? I'm sure they would be cheaper since they are old and all but it may still be a hefty chunk upon initial start up. Also - most of them cost more if you want to add or change anything about the original (i.e. if multiplayer didn't exist previously)
Have you looked into how much the licensing would cost at all ?
Well not necessarily any particular game. More of a general post so I have yet to do research about licensing on any particular game. More of an example.
"GPS latency"
Right now I am just base this idea off some of the Google videos and examples that use GPS. There is no real hardware out for android. So, kind of hard for me to comment directly on that issue.
I will look into some of the other phone games that use mobile location based systems.
GroundLoad, licensing is a good point, but I think we could potentially use the classics as inspiration if we can't get the actual title name.
QIX? Any ideas there? I can see the areas filling up on your phones display depending on the areas you've sealed off (while you avoid the QIX player, who much like the video game, can move at unpredictable speeds). But QIX boxes the player in while the game progresses.
Games with virtual walls are a challenge.
For PacMan, it could be real-world structures create the maze, right? There's not virtual walls you can't walk thru.
(Geeze, no one commented on Club Dread... people... that is the best movie EVER! I mean Citizen Cane is in black and white so it doesn't even compare.)
Oh and... this is probably obvious, but in real-world, players could potentially pass over each other if they're in a building. That might add challenges too.
You run into the street to avoid being eaten by a virtual monster only to be run over by a real truck.
There some virtual reality projects out there making use of PACMAN as the game too.
They can overlay virtual cookies on the real roads..and maybe virtual monster too
Maybe pacman indoors is a safer option :)
"You run into the street to avoid being eaten by a virtual monster only to be run over by a real truck." Game over, well I assume people have a sense of there on reality. Some what if situations are kind of hard to prepare.
What if in the game the player is sleeping and eating virtual food but in reality they are not. Then the player dies reality because they thought virtual reality was real.
What if in the game it tells you to kill yourself. Do you then proceed to jump of the bridge?
-----------
Another idea, what about using text games. Except the locations and everything is real. Do you turn left on park avenue with your longsword to fight the dragon? or Do you turn right and explore the rest of your world.
Kevin... ah... what if the GPS driven game was in fact only written for 1 city? And it may describe elements around you, and direct you to clues. So the characters in the game may be bogus (and they don't impede your movement), but the environments are all real.
Maybe part of the challenge would be to:
- Get somewhere you probably shouldn't be. For example, in the real work, I know that a certain door is never locked. You could hint them towards it in the game, but to progress in the game player will eventually have to position himself behind that door. (Yes, I know GPS not that accurate, let's roll with it.)
- Get somewhere FAST. Uh... uh... where did i read it. Virtual guards. http://www.wired.com...azine/15-11/ps_tower
...avoid the guards. Escape. You read that article, and it seems like they don't really have the time to investigate gameplay, but we could be all about gameplay.
Sorry, obviously I've moved quite far from classic game inspired themes. Unless you want to call it Berzerk. "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" "Get the humanoid!"
It does not have to be classic. I just picked classic because typically they are easy to code for. Also, less learning curve.
I have been working on a prototype game tic-tac-toe. Seems easy enough you physically to move to the box to let you take the space.
Maybe it could just be a running/walking program the tracks how far and how fast you walk/run every day.
Just posted the prototype.
Use you imagination for a bit. You are player one and your friend is player two. First you use the GPS map and select the land area to play what ever size you want. Then you and your friend have to move around and play the game.
There could be all kinds of extra things added also. For example: Time element you must get to the spot in x amount of time or you lose that turn.
Keep it mind it dose not have to be the game prototype I posted it can be anything.
I increased my rating.:)
BTW, it's SDK, not SKD ;)
Looks, good, glad to see you are making progress. Any experience with OpenGL so you can get some compelling graphics.?(For example a level select that used the "album flip effect" like the browser history would be sweet.)
LOL Darn typos!
I have not coded that much in Android yet to know about all the android GUI stuff. Do you know of any examples that use the "album flip effect"?
You're not hardcore unless you live hardcore; its just an early prototype.
Is that a concept-video, or screen capture of android code executing (prototype)?
Its showing you dynamically how you're moving around (almost real-time feedback), then you hit "play" to drop your X or O. If its android code, how do you convince the emulator that you're moving around?
It'll be a good example to get some running code for android platform. Tic-tac-toe is pretty lame, but certainly the find-an-opponent and declare-victory type screens would stay useful if the core-game gets swapped.
Its very cool you've posted that. Eventually we'll have to nail some game where android capabilities work for the game, instead of being arbitrary.
It looked like android code executing. That is how the emulator works, displays the red "night rider" screen and then your application is loaded (Kevin_Cox must have a decent machine because it takes a while on my laptop)
Kevin_Cox - The "album flip" is built in. I am cooking up my own working example... I'll post video and source code when I am done.
There is no GPS data I have not worked that in yet. Although you can "trick android into thinking there is data. Example you can trick android into thinking someone is calling your phone.
They way I did it was just set moving the player to the buttons. Press the button and the player moves. Google has a tutorial on how to do it in there examples.
I cut out some of the red "night rider" screen to save video time.
People may have interpreted my smart-alex comment above about running into the street as a negative for this idea. I don't really think that would happen. This is a good idea.
"Kevin_Cox - The "album flip" is built in. I am cooking up my own working example... I'll post video and source code when I am done."
Sweet. I know I have seen a few new built in stuff from Google.
Got something to say?
